Signs you may need check engine light
A check engine light is the single most misunderstood warning on your dashboard. The code a scanner pulls doesn't tell you what's broken — it tells you which system reported a problem. A P0299 doesn't mean "replace the turbo," and a P0420 rarely means you simply need a catalytic converter. Replacing parts off a raw code is how people end up paying twice.
Diagnosis the right way
At Appalachian Auto & Diesel we take an engineering-based approach: we pull the codes, then test. Live data, freeze-frame, fuel trims, sensor readings, and the wiring behind them all get checked until the actual failure is confirmed. Only then do we quote a repair — and we explain it in plain language so you know exactly what you're paying for and why.

We diagnose gas and diesel engines across all makes and models, with deep experience on GM platforms and Duramax, Cummins, and Power Stroke trucks. Diesel diagnostics in particular reward patience: fuel, emissions, and electronics interact in ways a quick code read will never catch.

Is it safe to drive with my check engine light on?
A steady light usually means you can drive carefully and get it checked soon. A flashing light means an active misfire that can destroy your catalytic converter — stop driving and call us. When in doubt, call before you drive.
Will you just read the code for free?
A free parts-store code read only tells you which system flagged a fault, not what failed. We charge for a real diagnosis because that's what saves you from buying parts you don't need. The diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair when we do the work.
How long does a diagnosis take?
Many drivability issues are pinned down in an hour or two. Intermittent or diesel electronics faults can take longer because they have to be caught happening. We'll give you a realistic timeline up front.
